Hillcrest has a high population density compared to other neighborhoods in San Diego and residents enjoy a variety of housing options including older Victorian, craftsman, Spanish, mid-century, and art deco homes mixed with new upscale apartments and hip condominiums. Just south of Hillcrest you will find Balboa Park, the largest urban cultural park in North America.
Hillcrest has everything that exemplifies a pedestrian-friendly, urban neighborhood. It has lots of color and character, and Hillcrest is very lively. if you like the idea of doing most of your social activities, shopping and dining right where you live, then you’ll love this area. In Hillcrest the gay community has been embraced and included.

The iconic Hillcrest sign spans University Avenue at Fifth Avenue. First erected in 1940 as a gift to the community from neighborhood female shopkeepers, it was rebuilt and relit in 1984.
